A Little Wishing!

So, as you know..Dave is in China.  Have I mentioned how MUCH I miss him? I miss him A LOT!
Instead of Dave being away all alone in a foreign country..I wish we could be on vacation together somewhere really nice.  I was thinking somewhere like the beach. It sounds perfect to me.

This picture is of us on our honeymoon in the Bahamas.
Sounds nice right about now, doesn't it?
Oh well..one can dream.
Only 2 more days until Dave gets back!

Dave Detained At Hong Kong Border

Dave and I have been skyping morning and night since he has been in Hong Kong. Yesterday, I was waiting and waiting for him to get online. I started texted him...but no response. I got a little worried about him...then he finally texted me! He got held at the Hong Kong/China border. Poor Dave! Here is what happened in his own words...

For the highlight of the day. On our way back to Hong Kong, we, of course, needed to pass through customs and immigration. No big deal, right?

At the third of three checkpoints, we (our driver, a factory manager, Randee and I) found ourselves waiting an awfully long time for clearance. The light ahead of us stayed red. Other cars on our right and left were being let through. Not us. Every so often, a customs agent peeked his head out of a small sliding glass window. The factory manager, a man named Michael, assured us nothing was wrong. Then, all of sudden, another agent came rushing up to the side of our car. A siren blasted behind us. The agent asked to board our van so he could escort us to another checkpoint area where we’d be searched. Randee – a bit unnerved as it was– was forced to practically sit in my lap to make room in the car for this customs agent, who didn’t speak English and didn’t have anything close to a smile on his face.

We arrived at this other checkpoint and were told to get out. Our belongings were taken out of the back of the van. By now there were four or five other agents walking around us. Imagine what I was thinking. They’re going to confiscate the camera, smash the memory card and break the tripod in half. Turns out my mind overreacted a bit. We were, though, taken to an X-ray room where all our things were put on a conveyer belt. That apparently wasn’t a convincing enough inspection because we were then taken to a small room with white walls, four chairs and a table. The agents again opened our bags. Poor Michael had everything inside of his suitcase taken out and displayed on the table.

After this part of the search was over, we were told our van was going to be driven through a giant screening machine. We were asked to sit in this little room and wait…and wait…and wait. Finally, handed our bags, were given the OK to leave. Everything was intact except maybe our sanity.

The entire screening process took 45 minutes and the agents thanked us for our patience. Of all of the hundreds and hundreds of cars passing through customs and immigration on this day OURS was the vehicle chosen for a thorough screening. We must’ve been part of a glorious training exercise. Lucky us.

At least I’ll always have a good story to tell – one that I’ll be sure to embellish over the years. Hey, how many other people can say they were detained at the China border? I’ll have much more on my trip tomorrow with coverage from the Hong Kong Gifts & Premium Fair.

Our Favorite Show

Do you have a favorite show that reminds you of your life?  Well me and Dave found our show!
We are obsessed with The King Of Queens.  Dave thinks that I am exactly like Carrie  - I think that is why  he likes to watch it with me.  We record like 3 episodes a day..that is how much we love it. We find ourselves laughing the entire time.
Here is one of our favorite scenes..

So it gets better..
Arthur, Carrie's dad is a spitting image of my dad. Not even joking people.
Take a look for yourself at how ridiculously funny he is..

He is so funy! I can't stop laughing!
Hope you all get a good laugh too!

Dave Blogs From Hong Kong

It definitely was an odd feeling to leave Philadelphia Saturday morning and finally arrive in Hong Kong late Easter Sunday night. A delayed flight, three-quarters of a day in the air and a 12-hour time difference does tend to rearrange what seems normal. I wound up spending those “missing” hours catching up on some sleep, eating better-than-I-expected airline-provided Chinese noodles and watching in-flight movies (wish I would’ve dozed off during Gulliver’s Travels rather than The King’s Speech).

Fortunately, my bags made it to China despite almost being lost in Chicago. Apparently, the destination tag fell off my luggage in transit from Philly. A U.S. Airways representative was nice enough to call me after seeing a contact card and find out where my next stop was. Otherwise, who knows where all my clothes would be now.

My trip from the Hong Kong International Airport to my hotel – The W – lacked for drama and I’m grateful for that. The poor driver kept apologizing because more than once he flipped on the windshield wipers rather than the turn signal. He didn’t seem to be a fan of Japanese-made cars.

My first impressions of Hong Kong were comforting. It’s amazing how familiar things can look in a strange place. We crossed over a spitting image of the Golden Gate Bridge, dealt with the hassles of some late-night highway construction and passed sign after sign that read: Don’t Drink and Drive. It did take me a while, though, to get settled in my hotel room. I stared at the shower for a few minutes before I figured out how to turn it on (see confounding image below). I suspected operator error when I couldn’t quite get the plug adapter to work. Turns out it was just broken. I couldn’t believe in-room Internet access was $40/hour. Then I remembered to convert the currency and the price significantly dropped.

TV here isn’t quite what I’m used to in the U.S. There are versions of ESPN, CNN, CNBC and Fox News, but there’s a clear programming time lag. I quickly lost interest in the Yankees/Orioles game when I already knew who won.

So there you have it. That’s a recap of my first hours in Hong Kong. Here’s what you can expect during the coming days: Over the next week, I’ll be following around a few of the good folks from Dard Products. We’ll head to a factory in Shenzhen, experience the massive Hong Kong Gifts & Premium Fair and haggle to get some deals in a local marketplace. I also plan to interview other industry execs who are here in Hong Kong, as well as some locals to get a sense of trade/labor challenges (and benefits) in Asia. I’ll be taking pictures wherever I am for a slide show, plus I’ll be shooting video that will eventually be turned into a TV-type report, similar to what you might see on the local news (that’s the goal, at least).

If anybody has any ideas for places for me to see, or just wants to say hi (either in-person here in Hong Kong or from back home), email me at dvagnoni@asicentral.com.

And by the way…Happy Belated Easter

Jesus Christ Lives!

We have thought a lot about what the Easter season means to us over the last month.  We were able to teach a class at a YSA conference last weekend about the Atonement and how Jesus Christ can help us in our lives with any burden we have. It was great to reflect on this and realize how lucky we all are to have Christ in our lives and that He does live! He really does lift our burdens and make life much easier.  He loves us so much and does answer our prayers. We will forever be grateful for this. We are happy to know that we will one day be resurrected and live with God, Jesus Christ and our families forever.

We love this video and what a great reminder to us all.
Let us all remember the true meaning of this holiday and not just for one day but always.
We wish everyone a happy Easter!

Remembering When...

Over the last few weeks Dave and I have been organizing our pictures.  We have been trying to make prints, photobooks and etc...we seriously have way too many pictures.
We found some pretty funny pictures from the first times we went out!
NOT an attractive picture at all and we both look like the biggest dorks.. but I remember that day so well. I lived in Manyunk and they have some really cool restaraunts there and so Dave suggested we go to Jake's and I said no, how about Thomas'..thinking he was joking and there was no such thing as Thomas'..or Jakes..well guess what?  They both exist! Ha ha. We went to Thomas' for dinner. I don't think we will ever go back because it was not all that great.
We had so much fun back then..when we didn't have to be real adults with responsibilities.
Don't get me wrong, we still have fun but just in our comfy clothes and on the couch in our own home!
Isn't growing up so much fun?

China

This is where Dave will be going in a few short days...
Sounds cool right?
Most people would be so excited to go...I mean it is like a free trip.
Dave is not excited at all. He has been having nightmares about it. He hates to fly and is scared to death of the language barrier.  Two others from his company are also going but on different flights and will be in different parts of China. Dave is going to research and write a story.  He also needs to be his own camera man and carry a 30,000 dollar camera with him everywhere he goes. This kind of stuff does not freak me out at all..but poor Dave!
I guess this is what you get for being such a talented writer and reporter right?
 Let's hope he survives.
We considered me going with him but I decided against it. I would have gotten bored and have no desire to ever go to China and would rather go to Italy to do geneology (that is my excuse for one day when we do go) so pictures will be just fine.  I am so excited for him even if he's not!

Does anyone have any words of encouragement for Dave? If so, please share! Anything will help him at this point.

Ps..Yay for skype because we will be doing lots of it next week!

Sometimes All You Need Is...

ZWHALENS
Ice Cream

All last week we researchd cameras and grills.  We even went out and looked around and still had not figured out exactly what we wanted and what was best for us.
We decided that Friday night we would go and make our purhases. Well things did not go as planned.
It was like everywhere we went nothing was working out. They either didn't have what we wanted in stock, it was discontinued or they were closed.  At this point we decided to screw it and get some yummy ice cream to make our night better!
There is nothing like a hot fudge sunday from Zwhalens.
They seriously have the best ice cream in the world and lots of yummy chocolates too...
You should try it sometime!
So the point of the story is that sometimes like I have said before you have to just go with it and sometimes all you really need is some Zwalens ice cream.

We did end up getting a camera on Saturday and are very happy with our purchase. We are hopeful to find a grill this week before Dave leaves for China.

It's Hockey Time.

If you know my husband...
you know how much he loves SPORTS!
Wish I could say the same about myself...
The only thing you will see me watching on TV is baseball..I love our team...the Phillies!
As for Dave he would watch it all day long...
Last year he got tickets for a Flyers playoff hockey game...

I know I look so cute..wearing a sweatshirt while Dave is seriously overdressed in a button-down shirt..like serioulsy who dresses up for a hockey game? Ok..ok..we both came from work..I dress comfy and he dresses nice.

Let's just say it is much more interesting in person ...also when the lady next to you gets hit in the head with a hockey puck..luckily it wasn't me.
So what do you think my handsome hubby is doing at this very moment?
Watching the Stanley Cup playoffs first round..
and cheering for his..oh I guess "our" favorite team..

Let's go Flyers! I am kind of hoping they lose so I can have Dave back and watch my girlie shows!

Just Go With It..

We, or should I say..Dave got some free movie tickets..YAY! I say yay because we don't spend money on the movies all that often..so we were pretty excited about this. We narrowed down our choices and of course we decided to see the "chick flick"...Just Go With It.  Dave won't admit that he liked it..but I know he did because he was laghing the entire time.

Just Go With It

Anyways..I won't ruin it for you but they say the phrase just go with it a lot...meaning like just go with the flow and let it be...well this has become our favorite phrase now.
If the kitchen is a mess...just go with it.
If we have a lot to do but want to sleep...just go with it.
If we know we shouldn't eat anymore ice cream but really want more...just go with it.
If we want to skip out on the gym..just go with it.
Ok..I think we sound lazy but hey just go with it.
I am hoping this phrase stops soon otherwise we may need some serious help cleaning the house and getting us out of bed.
By the way- if you haven't noticed yet, we liked the movie!

I Was Really In The Mood To...

RUN today.  It was beautiful and warm out. I wanted to be outside, not stuck in the gross gym..especially when their pool has been closed for almost a week.
I hurt my foot pretty bad about 1 1/2 yrs ago.  I have something called Plantar fasciitis. I realized I had this when I ran a half marathon 2 years ago and when I was training for the Philadephia full marathon...but I kept going. By the time I would get to mile 4 my foot would go numb..then I then I could run pain free and push myself to complete my mileage. Well..that was a dumb thing to do. It made it worst. It hurt so bad that I couldn't walk in the morning. I would crawl and sit on the stairs and slide down..it was kinda funny though.  Well, I ended up deciding  2 days before the marathon not to do it. It is a good thing I didn't becuase I had a small break in my foot plus Plantar fasciitis! DUH!....I got some cortisone shots and now have the real orthodics..I am still waiting for it to get better..

These are a couple of pics of the Baltimore half..I can't find any pics of me and the actual race..so hotel will have to do..

Now, I bike and swim. I actually love swimming ...well lets be honest..I love it minus the swim cap..I have a huge face so imagine me with a swim cap on..ha ha ..I look lke a pink pumpkin...
I wanted to swim today but the pool has been closed because the heater broke..I was really sad...So I have been stuck biking and doing Jillian Michaels 6 pack in 6 weeks and dreaming of being outside, feeling the breeze while I run.
So, even though I was in the mood to run and tried to convince Dave that I could run and actually got on the tredmill and tried to run...I am glad I didn't.  This just means I am one step closer to actually not being in pain and being allowed to run!
Yay!

The Many Faces of Dave

Don't let Dave fool you..
He is not as serious as you all think he is...

He is actually kinda funny...

I hope you all pulled some pranks...
Because..I sure did!
Happy April 1st!
